Field Hockey Outlasts Southern Maine in 2OT, 2-1

GORHAM,Maine – The Manhattanville College field hockey team continued their winning ways Sunday afternoon, outlasting the University of Southern Maine in double overtime, 2-1.

Senior Rylee McGuire (Grantham, N.H./Lebanon)'s goal with just 18 seconds remaining in the second overtime period lifted the Valiants  (3-3 overall) to their third consecutive victory.  As the game appeared to be going to penalty strokes, McGuire tapped in a pass from junior Amanda Cirocco (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley) for the game-winner.

Manhattanville jumped out to a 1-0 lead early, when junior Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands/Willen de Zwigger College) fired a shot off of a penalty corner that beat goalkeeper Amanda Kasbohm in the 11th minute for her third goal in as many games.  The Valiants  held that lead for the remainder of the half, controlling the tempo and outshooting the Huskies 8-3.

The Huskies answered at the beginning of the second half.   After controlling the ball for the first five minutes, Southern Maine finally broke through the Valiant defense when Kyrstyn Keating carried the ball to the end line and found Michaela Demers for the equalizer.

Both goalkeepers were solid throughout the rest of the game, with Valiant goalkeeper Meghan Hughes (Kintnersville, Pa./Palisades) stopping eight shots in regulation and Kashbohm stopping ten.  Neither team was able to find the back of the cage and headed to overtime deadlocked at 1-1.

The Valiants earned two penalty corners in the first overtime period, but managed just one shot and the game remained tied at the end of the first 15-minute period.  The second overtime period proved to be much more exciting, with the teams registering a combined ten shots in the period.  Both teams had solid chances before McGuire's game winner in the 100th minute.

Hughes finished with another very solid performance, making ten saves and picking up her third win of the year.

The Valiants return to GoValiants.com Field on Thursday, September 19 when they play host to Ramapo College at 7:00 P.M.
