CAMDEN, N.J. – The Manhattanville College men's soccer team took home third place at the Cialella Soccer Classic Sunday afternoon after defeating New Jersey City University 4-0.
The Valiants (3-2 overall) and Gothic Knights (1-4 overall) went back and forth for much of the first half, combining for 17 shots. The Valiants caught a break and went up on top in the 39
th minute when a Gothic Knight defender knocked a ball in for an own goal to give Manhattanville a 1-0 lead.
The teams continued to battle in the second half, with each team able to work the ball into the attacking half, combining for 21 shots in the half. The Valiants held the 1-0 lead until the 81
st minute, when the Manhattanville offense caught fire. The Valiants scored their second goal of the afternoon when
Oskar Martinsson (Orust, Sweden/Uddevalla Gymnasieskola) volleyed a corner kick from
Hugo Landberg (Stockholm, Sweden/The Aquinas Institute of Rochester) inside the far post to give the team a two-goal cushion.
Manhattanville kept their foot on the gas pedal, striking for another goal in the 85
th minute when Martinsson returned the favor to Landberg, finding him on a cross from the left side, which he was able to put home off of the crossbar.
The Valiants added another goal for good measure just 39 seconds later, when Martinsson scored his second goal of the game to give Manhattanville a 4-0 lead which they would hold onto the rest of the way.
"It was good to bounce back from yesterday with a solid win. NJCU were athletic and well organized, so to score 4 goals was a major plus," said head coach
Gregg Miller. "We are dealing with a lot of injuries at the moment, with five starters missing. This weekend was a good test of our squad depth and thankfully we came through today relatively unscathed."
With his two-goal performance today, Martinsson was named to the Cialella Soccer Classic All-Tournament Team alongside senior
Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's).
The Valiants return to action this Wednesday, when they travel to New Jersey to take on William Paterson University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 P.M.
