Men’s Soccer Battles William Paterson for 0-0 Draw

WAYNE, N.J. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team battled William Paterson University for 110 minutes in a 0-0 draw Wednesday night.

Manhattanville (3-2-1) had difficulties breaking down the Pioneer defense in the first half, registering just one shot in the first 45 minutes.   MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week Willie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) kept the Valiants in the game however, making four saves to keep it scoreless heading into halftime.

The Valiants were able to chip away at the defense of William Paterson (2-3-1) in the second half.  Junior Omar Parra (Gulfport, Miss./Gulfport) was able to break through and get off a shot that was turned away by Pioneer goalkeeper Mike Villegas.  The Pioneers tried to answer quickly with a counter-attack, but Silber held his own, making three saves in five minutes to once again keep the game scoreless.

Late in the half Manhattanville began to build some momentum on the offensive end.  In the 73rd minute, senior Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) had a look at goal but was once again turned away by Villegas.  The Valiants had one of their best opportunities in the 84th minute when sophomore Robin Schaufele (Kalix, Sweden/Kungsfaegeln) fired a shot that was knocked over the end line by Villegas and earned the Manhattanville a corner kick.  Freshman Hugo Landberg (Stockholm, Sweden/The Aquinas Institute of Rochester) was able to find sophomore Jeffrey Carreira (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) whose shot missed just left of the post.  The Valiants had one last attempt late in the half, when Eddie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) fired a shot in the 90th minute but was turned aside by Villegas to keep the game scoreless at the end of regulation.

In the first overtime period Manhattanville took the ball into the attacking end and quickly earned a corner kick, but was unable to get a shot on net as Silber's shot was blocked in the box.  The Valiants controlled the period, never allowing the Pioneers to have any opportunities in their offensive end.

The Valiant defense showed their toughness in overtime, holding the Pioneers without a shot in both overtime periods.  Manhattanville was once again unable to find the back of the net in the second overtime period and the teams ended in a 0-0 draw.

Manhattanville goalkeeper Willie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) once again turned in an impressive performance, making nine saves on the night to record his first shutout of the season.

The Valiants remain on the road this weekend as they travel to Marywood on Saturday, September 19.  Kickoff is set for 3:00 P.M.
