Schaufele’s Goal Leads Men’s Soccer Past Marywood 1-0

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team continued to shut down opponents on Saturday as they took down Marywood University 1-0.

The Valiants (4-2-1 overall) did not allow the Pacers (1-3-2) to have many good looks at goal, limiting their offense to several long-distance shots and shots that were off-target.  It is the third consecutive game in which Manhattanville has held its opponent scoreless.

Sophomore Robin Schaufele (Kalix, Sweden/Kungsfaegeln) was a key component of the Manhattanville attack all day Saturday.  Schaufele missed the net wide on a header in the 1st minute of the game, and continued to find space early, having two shots go high of the target.  The Valiants and Pacers remained scoreless after 45 minutes and headed into halftime all square.

"We were a bit tentative in the first half," said head coach Gregg Miller.  "We played a lot better in the second half though.  We were more aggressive, we played on the front foot and we really took the game to them."

The Valiants came out aggressive in the second half as Miller said.  After applying offensive pressure in the beginning of the half, Schaufele helped to spark some momentum for Manhattanville.  In the 55th minute, Jefferson Santos (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) was able to find Schaufele on a through ball and this time he was able to beat Pacer goalkeeper Justin Sunseri for his third goal of the season, giving the Valiants a 1-0 lead.

On the defensive end, Manhattanville remained solid.  Senior Willie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) continued his dominance in goal, stopping five Pacer shots in 58 minutes of action before being replaced by freshman Markus Schwarz (Vienna, Austria/Al Bateen Secondary School).  Schwarz made two stops the rest of the way, despite facing some heavy offensive pressure from Marywood in the final five minutes to help preserve the shutout and give the Valiants their fourth win of the season.

"Markus was really solid in goal today.  It was really his first chance to get some significant minutes and he played really well to help us preserve the clean sheet," said Miller.  "We just made the game too close.  The last five minutes we had to hold off some pretty strong pressure.  We need to do a better job of closing games off," said Miller regarding the defensive play, "but in the end it was nice to pick up a road win."

The Valiants will have plenty of time to rest and recover before their next matchup. Manhattanville will remain on the road when they travel to Drew University next Saturday, September 26.  Kickoff for that matchup is set for 3:30 P.M.
