Manhattanville Sweeps Third Tri-Match of 2015 with Wins over Lehman and St. Joseph's

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Freshman Laura LiVolsi (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) and junior Alissa Primavera (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) tied for the team lead with 17 kills apiece as the Manhattanville College women's volleyball team swept its third tri-match of the season with dual 3-0 victories over Lehman College and host St. Joseph's (L.I.) College on Saturday afternoon at the Danzi Center.

LiVolsi hit .400 with 17 kills on 30 attempts and also chipped in five digs in the victories, while Primavera hit .302 and also added five digs and sophomore Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y./Christ the King) continued her hot hitting with 15 kills and a .430 hitting percentage for Manhattanville (10-3). Freshman Christina Nardi (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) led the Valiants with 18 digs and 12 service aces, and junior setter Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) added 54 assists, 11 digs and 10 aces.

LiVolsi led the way for Manhattanville in the first match of the day, putting down a season-high 11 kills on 15 attacks (.667 hitting) as the Valiants swept Lehman, 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-11).

Primavera added seven kills on .353 hitting for the Valiants in the first match of the day, while Quinabo registered 25 assists and a match-high seven aces against the Lightning.

The Valiants were in control from the very start against Lehman, as a kill from sophomore Asia Reid (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nellie A. Thornton High School) was followed by four straight Quinabo service aces as part of a 6-0 run that helped the squad take an early one-set lead. In the second set, Lehman overcame another early deficit to take a 12-11 lead midway through the frame, but Manhattanville finished the set on a 14-6 run to take a 2-0 lead.

The third set followed a similar script as the first, as Quinabo served up three more aces as part of a 7-0 run to start the stanza, and this time Manhattanville did not let Lehman back into the match to complete the sweep.

Mackey and Primavera teamed up to lead Manhattanville to victory in its second match, as the tandem combined for 23 kills in the 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-13) victory over the Golden Eagles.

Mackey was on fire against the host squad, hitting .706 with 13 kills and one error on only 17 attempts; her percentage is the highest by a Valiant with at least 12 kills since the program started back up in 2007. Primavera added 10 kills while Nardi chipped in seven digs and eight aces as well for the visitors.

After handing St. Joseph's an early 4-1 lead in the first set, Manhattanville stormed back with a 13-5 swing that put the visitors up 14-9, helped by four straight Nardi aces and five overall during the run. SJC got back within one at 18-17, but two home team errors sent Nardi back to the service line and she added three more aces to help close out the set.

Junior Samantha Miano (Bronx, N.Y./Maria Regina) got into the ace action to start the second set, earning a pair of aces as part of the team's 6-0 start. Again the Golden Eagles managed to get back within a point (14-13) but again they could get no closer, as the Valiants went on an 11-6 run to end the frame and take a two-set lead.

The third set was tied at 11 before Mackey decided to dominate play following a SJC service error, as the sophomore put down kills on six of the next seven points to put Manhattanville ahead 19-11 and allow the visitors to cruise to the match victory.

Manhattanville will get back into MAC Freedom play on Wednesday, as the Valiants face a near must-win match at Misericordia University beginning at 7 p.m. in Dallas, Pa.
