PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior
Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands/Willen de Zwigger College) scored twice and junior
Haley Linkroum (Deposit, N.Y./Deposit) made four defensive saves on the day as the Manhattanville field hockey took down King's (Pa.) College, 3-1, in the Valiants' home opener at GoValiants.com Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Valiant defense was the highlight of the day, as Manhattanville successfully defended 16 of the Lady Monarchs' 17 corners on the afternoon. Despite facing 15 shots on goal, junior goalkeeper
Kaitlin Halloran (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) stopped 10 shots and Linkroum knocked away four more to allow just one goal on the afternoon. Linkroum now has nine defensive saves on the year, putting her inside the top-five nationally among Division III players and tied for fifth on the school's single-season list.
On the offensive end, Manhattanville (6-4 overall, 1-1 MAC Freedom) took advantage of its penalty corner opportunities, scoring on three of five attempts to come away with the win. The scoring started when Smits fired a shot that was stopped by Lady Monarch goalkeeper Paige Tedick, but rebounded right to junior inserter
Melissa Stys (Pequannock, N.J./Kent School), who deflected the loose ball inside the left post to give Manhattanville the early 1-0 advantage.
From there, the Stys-Smits duo continued to work their magic, as the Dutch defender fired a rocket from the top of the circle in the 26th minute for her eighth goal of the season. The combination struck for their third time in the 50th minute, when Smits again fired a low laser inside the right post on a pass from Stys to make it a 3-0 game. A late goal and several penalty corner opportunities were not enough for the Lady Monarchs, as Manhattanville held on to win their first home game of the 2016 season.
After playing nine straight on the road to begin the year, the Valiants continue their three-game homestand on Wednesday when they play host to Western Connecticut State in their final non-conference match of the year starting at 4:30 p.m.
