PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's basketball team held Keystone College to just 19 percent shooting for the game and used a 24-6 run that spanned nearly 18 minutes to roll past the Giants 54-32 in the opening round of the 2nd annual Battle of the Castle Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Kennedy Gym.
Freshman
Nancy Caballero (Henderson, Nev./Liberty) led all scorers on the day with 11 points on 3-5 shooting, and junior
Joiada Darnell (St. Albans, N.Y./Humanities and the Arts) had a big day in the low post, scoring eight points while hauling in 11 rebounds and adding three blocks and four steals for Manhattanville (2-0).
It didn't take long for the Valiants to jump on top, scoring 18 first quarter points to lead by 11 after the first ten minutes of action. It was the next 18 minutes of action however that blew the game open for Manhattanville, as the Valiants allowed just six Giant points while adding 24 of their own to take a 25-point lead before Keystone hit two free throws at the 3:14 mark of the 3rd quarter to end the run.
Manhattanville held the Giants to single digit scoring for the first three quarters of the game and continued their impressive defensive play all day, forcing 25 turnovers and allowing just 11 field goals on 56 shot attempts by Keystone.
The Valiants will look to bring home the tournament title tomorrow when they square off against Connecticut College tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm.
