ROSEMONT, Pa. - The Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team kicked off its 2016 campaign with an 11-9 victory over Rosemont College on Wednesday afternoon.
Manhattanville never trailed in the win, with the two teams finding themselves tied just once after the opening faceoff. Sophomore
Tyler Bentrewicz (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) scored the game-winning goal in the final period, finding the back of the net twice in a span of five minutes. Junior
Andrew Murray (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) paced the Valiant attack with five goals and ten ground balls in the win. Junior
Ed Motherway (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) recorded his seventh career multi-goal game, scoring twice for the Valiants. Junior goalkeeper
Zach Hoffman (Loudonville, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) made 13 saves on the afternoon, picking up his first victory of the season.
In a game that got off to a slow start, the Valiants jumped ahead of the Ravens (1-1 overall) when Murray scored his first goal of the season late in the first period to give Manhattanville the early advantage.
Manhattanville built up a three-goal lead in the second period, getting goals from junior
Colin Morrissey (Shelton, Conn./St. Joseph), Motherway, and freshman
Erik Sparby (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip). Murray netted his second goal of the game just over the midway point of the period, but Rosemont would respond with two goals of their own to make it a 5-4 game heading into the halftime break.
Murray extended the lead for Manhattanville early in the second half, scoring just over a minute and a half into the third quarter. After a Ravens goal, Motherway scored on the man-advantage to give the Valiants a two-goal lead once again. After Rosemont scored the next two to tie the game, Murray gave the Valiants the lead once again with 3:29 to play in the quarter; yet, Rosemont responded again to tie the score at eight heading into the fourth quarter.
Bentrewicz netted two goals in the final quarter to give the Valiants a two-goal lead. Rosemont would again attempt to cut into the lead, but the Valiants responded with Murray's fifth goal of the afternoon to seal the victory for Manhattanville.
Manhattanville has a week off before traveling to Farmingdale State next Wednesday. The opening face off for that contest is slated for 4:00 P.M.
