Clutch Shooting Leads Manhattanville Past King's in Overtime

Sarah Kelley hit two key jump shots in overtime to help Manhattanville take down the Lady Monarchs
Box Score WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Senior Ashley Raaf (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./Christ The King) hit a jump shot with eight seconds remaining in the final quarter to send the Valiants into overtime against the Lady Monarchs, and junior Sarah Kelley (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) hit two clutch jump shots in the final two minutes of overtime to help Manhattanville defeat King's College 71-68 Saturday afternoon to move back into a tie for third place in the MAC Freedom standings.

Four Valiants finished in double-figures, with senior Bri Pabon (Newington, Conn./Newington) finishing with a team-high 17 points, freshman Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) netted 16, Raaf with 15, and Kelley with an even ten points to lead the Valiants (14-6 overall, 6-4 MAC Freedom) balanced attack against the Lady Monarchs (11-10 overall, 4-6 MAC Freedom). In the win, McGuire also recorded her second double-double of the season, hauling in 11 boards to compliment her 16 points off the bench.

King's built an early five-point lead in the game as Manhattanville got off to a slow shooting start Saturday, but a six-point run capped off by a Kelley jumper gave Manahattanville a one-point advantage late in the quarter.

In the second quarter, the Valiants were able to hold the Lady Monarchs to just 5-17 shooting.  The Valiants went seven for eight from the foul-line in the quarter, and used six points from sophomore Samantha Milazzo (Bellmore, N.Y./John F Kennedy) to take a three-point lead into halftime.

King's would respond to start the second half, opening the third quarter on a 7-0 run to take a four-point lead.  Manhattanville would find a way to respond however, using their own 15-7 run over the final six minutes of the period.  Pabon was able to find her way into the lane to score six of her 17 during the stretch, and helped give Manhattanville a 47-42 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, Manhattanville's cold-shooting would once again return, going 0-5 from the field over a two minute stretch at the end of the quarter.  The Lady Monarchs would take advantage and used an 8-0 run in the final two minutes to take a five-point lead with 25 seconds to play.

Raaf would not let the Valiants falter however, hitting a huge three-pointer with 17 seconds to play to cut the deficit to two points.  After Pabon was able to cause a turnover, Raaf hit another clutch jumper with eight seconds left to tie the game and force overtime.

Pabon opened the overtime period with a quick layup to give Manhattanville the lead.  King's would tie the score midway through the period, But Kelley would hit two jump shots on two consecutive possessions to give the Valiants a four-point lead that they would not relinquish.

Around the MAC Freedom, Delaware Valley was defeated by DeSales Saturday afternoon, helping the Valiants to move back into a tie for third place in the standings after Manhattanville fell to the Aggies on Wednesday.  The Valiants will host the University of Saint Joseph Monday night at Kennedy Gym, before returning to MAC Freedom action against rival FDU-Florham Wednesday evening.
