PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville offense exploded in game one, and sophomore
Dennis Berardi (Brewster, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) pitched a gem in game two to lead the Valiants to a double-header sweep against John Jay Sunday afternoon.
Junior
John Delahanty (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) recorded three hits and two runs batted in and classmate
Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) drove in three runs to lead the Valiants (3-5 overall) offensively. Senior
Dillon Healy (Hastings, N.Y./Hastings) earned his first win of the year in game one, and Berardi earned the win in the second leg of the double-header.
GAME ONE: Manhattanville jumped on top early in the first contest, plating six runs on five hits, taking advantage of two Bloodhound errors. The Valiants scored again in the second inning before having another huge outburst in the third frame.
The Valiants started the inning with back-to-back doubles from senior
Chris Lattarulo (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) and freshman
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun). Senior
Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) added drove in a run with a base hit, and Lynch followed up with a sacrifice fly to make it a 10-1 game. The Valiants tacked on four more runs to make it a 14-1 game after three innings of play and never looked back.
Healy tossed five innings, allowing five runs on nine hits to earn the win for the Valiants in game one.
GAME TWO: The Valiants needed a more defensive mindset in game two, and got a stellar performance from starting pitcher
Dennis Berardi (Brewster, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic). The right-hander tossed six innings, allowing just one run and scattering three hits while striking out nine.
The Bloodhounds (1-10 overall) took the lead in the second inning, scoring their only run on a wild pitch with two outs. Berardi worked out of the jam by striking out Zach Hyde and stranding two runners in scoring position.
In the third it was the Valiants taking advantage of a wild pitch, tying the game when sophomore
Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) plated the first run for the Valiants on a wild pitch by Matthew Quirindongo.
Manhattanville tacked on a single run in the following three innings, taking a 4-1 lead after six innings of play.
Senior
Sam Garito (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Prep) came on in the seventh inning and shut down the Bloodhounds to earn his first save of the season and secure the sweep for Manhattanville.
The Valiants return to action Tuesday when they make the short trip down Anderson Hill Road to Purchase College for a non-conference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 P.M
