PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team suffered its second loss of the season, as they were unable to solve the pressure from unbeaten Mount Saint Mary, dropping a non-conference matchup to the Knights 17-8 Wednesday evening at GoValiants.com Field.
Freshman
Erik Sparby (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) had a career day in the loss, collecting six points on two goals and four assists. Juniors
Andrew Murray (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and
Colin Morrissey (Shelton, Conn./St. Joseph) each tallied three points, scoring two goals apiece and adding a single assist. Junior goalie
Zach Hoffman (Loudonville, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) recorded a season-high 15 saves in the loss.
The Valiants (2-2 overall) fell behind early to the Knights (6-0 overall) who controlled the tempo during the first quarter. Mount Saint Mary scored the first three goals of the game, scoring on their first three shots of the night. Manhattanville had limited chances on the offensive end, but were able to find the back of the net junior Collin Morrissey converted a nice look from fellow junior
Andrew Murray (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac). The Knights tacked on three more goals in the period and held a 6-1 lead after the first quarter.
The Knights continued to possess the ball in the first half of the second quarter, but the Valiant defense stood the task for the first six minutes of the frame. The Knights scored with just under nine minutes remaining, but the Valiants answered just a minute later when sophomore
Tyler Bentrewicz (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) scored his third goal of the season. Mount Saint Mary scored a final goal with six seconds remaining in the quarter. The Knights headed into halftime with a 10-2 lead and a 29-2 advantage in the shot category.
Murray opened up the scoring in the second half, firing a low shot from 20 feet out to make it a 10-3 game. The Knights responded quickly with a goal two minutes later to extend the lead back to eight. With the Knights down two men, Murray found the back of the net for his third point of the night, but again it was the Knights with the response on the opposite end, keeping the margin at eight.
In the final period of play, Sparby recorded two goals, and added an assist on a goal from Morrissey, but it was not enough, as the Knights added three goals of their own to hold on for the 17-8 win.
The Valiants take to the road for their next matchup, traveling to Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday for a non-conference matchup with the Dolphins. Faceoff for that contest is slated for 1:00 P.M.
