Healy's Strong Performance Helps Valiants Split with King's

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Senior Jake McGrath (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane) and freshman Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) each recorded three hits on the day, and senior Dillon Healy (Hastings, N.Y./Hastings) picked up his second win of the season as the Manhattanville College baseball team split the first two games of the season series with King's College in their opening MAC Freedom matchup of the season.

GAME ONE:  Healy was dominant on the mound for Manhattanville (6-6 overall, 1-1 MAC Freedom) in the opening game of the double-header.  The senior threw 6.1 innings, allowing just one run and two hits on his way to picking up his second victory of the season.

Despite the strong performance, the Valiants fell behind in the first inning when King's (10-4 overall, 1-1 MAC Freedom) took an early lead on a sacrifice fly.  Manhattanville responded quickly with an RBI single from McGrath in the second inning.

The Valiants plated three more runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead.  King's scored a run in the bottom half of the frame to cut the deficit to two runs, but neither team was able to score after that point.  Healy was replaced in the final inning by fellow senior Sam Garito (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Prep) who picked up his second save of the season and help secure the victory for Manhattanville in game one.

GAME TWO:  The second leg of the doubleheader was an offensive struggle for the Valiants.  As a team, Manhattanville recorded just four hits on the afternoon and were able to plate only one run.

Sophomore Dennis Berardi (Brewster, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) took the mound for the Valiants in game two, but struggled to find the plate, tossing 2.2 innings with seven walks.  Despite exiting the game early, Berardi kept Manhattanville in the. After allowing two runs in the second inning, Berardi worked out of a bases loaded jam to keep the Valiants within two runs. Sophomore John Fanelli (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) came on in relief in the third inning, and also worked out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the score 2-0.

King's added a run in the fourth inning with an RBi single to make the score 3-0.  Manhattanville cut into the deficit in the fifth on an RBI single from junior Anthony Ianuzzi, but were unable to score after that.

The Valiants final matchup with the Monarchs that was previously scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed due to the poor weather forecasted for the Purchase area.  A makeup date for that contest has not been confirmed.  Fans can check GoValiants.com and the official Manhattanville social media outlets for the reschedule date of that contest.
