NEWBURGH, N.Y. - A furious second-half rally came up just short for the Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team on Tuesday evening, as the Valiants scored nine of the game's last 11 goals but came up one tally short in a 14-13 defeat at the hands of Mount Saint Mary College in non-conference action at Kaplan Field.
Sophomore
Carly Weiss (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) led all scorers with a game-high five goals and six points for Manhattanville (4-2), which saw its program record-tying four-game winning streak come to an end with the defeat. Freshman
Kat Reilly (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) scored three goals and junior
Sarah Dalsey (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) chipped in two goals and a game-high seven draw controls as well for the visitors.
Katie Gattoni and Claire Duffy led Mount Saint Mary (4-2) with four goals and an assist apiece, while Shannon McGuinness added three goals.
After Mount Saint Mary jumped out to an early 5-1 lead, Manhattanville scored three of the next four to get back into the contest before a late MSMC run put the home team in control. The Knights scored the final three goals of the first half and the first three of the second stanza as well, building up a 12-4 lead with 19:22 remaining.
But Weiss did her best to get the Valiants back in the game, scoring three straight goals, and Dalsey added a free-position strike of her own to make it a 12-8 game with 14:18 left. A MSMC goal was answered by one from junior
Jenna Nance (Glendale, Calif./Glendale), and that was followed by back-to-back goals from Reilly to suddenly make it a 13-11 game with under seven minutes remaining.
McGuinness scored her third of the game with 3:12 left and Mount Saint Mary had the ball with 90 seconds left, looking to run out the clock. But Dalsey forced a turnover that eventually led to an eight-meter score from sophomore
Christina Leva (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) with 1:08 left, and Reilly then controlled the subsequent draw and went right to goal, finding the net just six seconds later to make it a one-goal game.
Dalsey controlled the ensuing draw and Manhattanville looked set up to mount another dramatic comeback, but Weiss had a shot blocked and Dalsey fired a shot off the post as the visitors came up just short.
Manhattanville finished the game with a slight 32-31 edge in shots, including a 5-of-9 effort from the eight-meter arc. Freshman
Alana Lopez (Wolcott, Conn./Vermont Academy) had another solid outing in goal for the Valiants, making 14 saves for the second straight start.
The Valiants will look to get back on the winning track next Wednesday, when the team hosts the College of Mount Saint Vincent for a 4 p.m. contest at GoValiants.com Field.
