KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference matchup against United States Merchant Marine Academy Wednesday evening 19-9.
Junior
Colin Morrissey (Shelton, Conn./St. Joseph) continued his solid offensive play on Wednesday, following up his five goal performance against Mount Saint Vincent with five goals against Mariners (5-1 overall). Freshman
Erik Sparby (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) scored in his third consecutive game, and the Valiants also received goals from senior
Connor Normandin (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell), junior
Ed Motherway (Suffield, Conn./Suffield), sophomore
Tyler Bentrewicz (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville), and freshman
Soya Goto (Rye, N.Y./Rye).
In goal, junior
Zach Hoffman (Loudonville, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) made 10 saves but it was not enough as the high-powered Merchant Marine offense recorded 44 shot attempts on the night.
The Mariners jumped ahead early with five goals in the first quarter. Morrissey stopped the run with a goal late in the period but the Valiants (3-3 overall) still found themselves down four after the first 15 minutes.
Merchant Marine continued to apply the heat on the offensive end, scoring nine more times in the second quarter to take a 14-4 lead into halftime.
The Valiants began to put the pieces together in the second half, holding the Mariners to just five goals over the final 30 minutes. Five different Valiants scored over a 15 minute period to make it a 16-9 game, but were unable to come any closer than that, falling to the Mariners and falling back to .500 for the year.
Manhattanville looks to get back on track Saturday when they travel to UMass Boston. Faceoff for that contest is scheduled for 5:00 P.M.
