Baseball Continues to Roll with Doubleheader Sweep of FDU-Florham

MADISON, N.J. – The Manhattanville College baseball team continued their hot play, improving to 10-1 since Spring Break with a doubleheader sweep of FDU-Florham Saturday.

The Valiant pitching staff limited the Devils (5-11-1 overall, 1-5 MAC Freedom) to just five runs despite allowing 16 hits over the two games.  At the plate, the Valiant bats stayed hot, piling up 21 hits on the day and scoring 16 runs to sweep the season series with the Devils.

Senior Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) recorded three hits and four RBI's on the day and drove in what proved to be the winning run in extra innings of game one.  Junior John Delahanty (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) went 4-9 at the dish and sophomore Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) scored four runs for the Valiants on the day.

GAME ONE:  Junior Dillon Healy (Hastings, N.Y./Hastings) had a solid start on the mound for the Valiants (11-6 overall, 5-1 MAC Freedom).  Healy tossed six innings, scattering five hits and allowing three runs while striking out two but was met by an equally impressive performance by his counterpart Andrew Hille.  Hille also tossed six innings for the Devils, allowing two runs while striking out nine.

The Valiants held the lead for the first six and a half innings of the game, needing just three outs to secure the victory, but the Devils had other plans in mind.  FDU scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.  After both teams were held scoreless in the eighth, the Valiants took command of the game in the top of the ninth.

Nunez got the scoring started, driving home his second run of the day with an RBI double to left field to give Manhattanville a 4-3 lead.  Freshman Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) followed up the double with a single to bring home Nunez.  The Valiants added another two runs on a throwing error to take a four run lead into the bottom of the ninth.

Senior David Mangum (Rye, N.Y./Rye) closed the door on the Devils in the bottom of the inning and picked up the win for Manhattanville.

GAME TWO:  The Valiants kept the dramatics to a minimum in game two, leading for the majority of the game.  Nunez gave Manhattanville the lead in the top of the first with a two run double to right center.  Nunez scored on a failed pickoff attempt to give Manhattanville a three run lead after the first inning.

After the Devils scored twice in the second inning, the Valiants scored the final six runs of the game, plating two in the third, two in the fourth, and two in the ninth inning to close out the season sweep of the Devils.

Senior Sam Garito (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Prep) earned the win for Manhattanville in game two, going four innings, allowing two runs while striking out three.

The Valiants return to action on Wednesday when they host Old Westbury at Manhattanville Field.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 P.M.
