Men's Lacrosse Falls to Maritime in Penultimate Non-Conference Matchup

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team fell to the Privateers of Maritime College Wednesday evening in a non-conference lacrosse matchup 10-6.

Sophomore Tyler Bentrewicz (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) paced the Valiant attack with four points, scoring twice and adding two assists for Manhattanville (3-5 overall).  Senior Connor Normandin (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell), juniors Ed Motherway (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) and Colin Morrissey (Shelton, Conn./St. Joseph), and freshman Erik Sparby (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) each netted a goal apiece in the loss.

Defensively, freshman Soya Goto (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and junior Kyle Kelvas (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) each caused two turnovers, and sophomore Jacob Cayton (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) led the way with five ground balls for the Valiants (5-2 overall). In goal, junior Zach Hoffman (Loudonville, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) made eight saves, but the Privateers were able to find the back of the net 10 times on the night.

The Valiants took the lead early, scoring the first two goals of the evening on goals from Bentrewicz and Normandin.  Maritime evened the scoring with goals 14 seconds apart late in the period.

Manhattanville again struck first in the second quarter, scoring three minutes into the period on Bentrewicz's second of the game.  The Privateers responded with two goals of their own to take their first lead of the game with 3:48 to play in the half.  After Sparby leveled the score with 36 seconds to play, Ian Danahy scored with just three seconds left in the half to give Maritime a 5-4 lead at the halftime break.

The Privateers extended the lead to two goals two minutes into the second half, but Manhattanville quickly cut the deficit in half on a goal from Morrissey.  Maritime did not allow the Valiants to level the score for the remainder of the game, with Manhattanville coming within one goal with 9:50 to play.  Maritime scored the final three goals of the game to take down Manhattanville by the 10-6 final.

The Valiants return to action next Wednesday when they travel to Bard for their final non-conference matchup of the season.
