Murray, Motherway's Career Days Lead Valiants Past Alvernia 11-3

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Junior Andrew Murray (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) tied his career-high and junior Ed Motherway (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) set a new career-high with five goals apiece and junior goalkeeper Zach Hoffman (Loudonville, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) allowed a career-low three goals as the Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team defeated Alvernia University Saturday 11-3.

The Valiants (2-1 overall) downed the Crusaders (1-3 overall) in their first game of the 2016 season at GoValiants.com Field behind a strong defensive performance and a big outburst by Murray and Motherway.  The Valiants allowed just 13 shots on goal on the afternoon, and Hoffman made ten saves while allowing just three goals for his second victory of the season.

Manhattanville jumped ahead early when freshman Soya Goto (Rye, N.Y./Rye) scored his second career goal just over four minutes into the contest.  Alvernia responded with a goal of their own just thirty seconds later, but Murray and Motherway scored their first goals of the afternoon late in the opening stanza to give Manhattanville a two-goal lead after the first fifteen minutes.

Murray and Motherway each scored a goal again in the second period while allowing the Crusaders to find the back of the net just once and the Valiants would take a 5-3 lead into halftime.

Manhattanville pulled away in the second half, with Motherway scoring on the man-advantage and Murray netting his third of the afternoon to make it 7-3 through three periods.  Murray and Motherway each added two more goals apiece in the final quarter and the Valiant defense held Alvernia scoreless in the second half to lead Manhattanville to their second win of the season.

Freshman Erik Sparby (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) picked up two assists on the afternoon and junior Colin Morrissey (Shelton, Conn./St. Joseph) added an assist as well.  Junior Kyle Kelvas (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) picked up four ground balls on the day and added a team-high two caused turnovers.  Junior Ed Seganti (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and Goto each tallied four ground balls as well for the Valiants.

The Valiants return to action Wednesday evening when they play their first game of the season under the lights on the home turf when they host Mount Saint Mary Collge.  Faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 P.M.
