MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Valiants were roughed up by Mount Aloysius in their final game of the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Mounties 16-5.
Manhattanville (1-5 overall) used nine different pitchers in the contest in an attempt to slow down the bats of Mount Aloysius (5-3 overall). After entering the game as a pinch hitter, junior
Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) collected two hits, including an RBI single.
The Valiants took the lead in the first inning, plating two runs in the opening frame to take a 2-0 lead. The Mounties quickly responded however. Freshman
Nick Simmons (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) made his first start on the mound for Manhattanville, pitching two innings, allowing four runs on five hits. Mount Aloysius scored three in the first inning, and added the fourth run in the second on an RBI single to center field.
Senior
Kurt Hommen (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) kept the Valiants in the game early, driving home junior
John Delahanty (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) to make it a 4-3 game in the fourth inning. Once again the Mounties responded, scoring twice in the fourth, once in the sixth, twice in the seventh, and capped off the run with four runs in the eighth.
The Valiants scored twice in the final frame but it was not enough as the Valiants fell to the Mounties in their final game of Spring Break. The team returns to action on Sunday, when they host John Jay College of Criminal Justice in a doubleheader matchup at Manhattanville Field. First pitch is slated for 12:00 P.M.
