ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – A late rally came up short for the Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon, as the Valiants dropped a tough 11-10 game to Eastern University in MAC Freedom action at Olson Field.
Sophomore
Carly Weiss (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) led Manhattanville (5-6, 0-2 MAC Freedom) with four points on three goals and an assist, followed by junior
Jenna Nance (Glendale, Calif./Glendale) with a season-high tying three goals. Junior
Sarah Dalsey (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) and freshman
Kat Reilly (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) added two goals apiece for the visitors.
Eastern (3-10, 1-1 MAC Freedom) was led by the tandem of Stephanie Hogan and Anna Charlebois, both of whom scored five goals.
The two teams alternated goals over the first 14 minutes, with Reilly and Weiss finding the net for Manhattanville to tie the score at two with 15:56 left in the half. However, Hogan scored three of the next four goals to go with one from Charlebois to give Eastern its largest lead at 6-2 with 8:00 to go in the frame.
The Valiants came back with three of the next four goals, including a pair from Weiss, to get within two at 7-5 before another Charlebois tally put Eastern up 8-5 at the half.
Manhattanville got within one early in the second stanza on goals from Reilly and Dalsey, but two Eastern goals regained the team's three-goal lead with 20:55 left. Eastern still led by three before Manhattanville made one last rally, with Dalsey scoring with 3:35 left and Nance finding the net in the final minute. But the Eagles controlled the subsequent draw and never gave the visitors a chance to equalize.
The two teams played a very even game, with Eastern barely outshooting Manhattanville by a slim 35-34 margin. Junior
Lauren Cassidy (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) had another big game between the pipes, reaching double figures in saves for the third straight game with 17 stops.
The Valiants will finish up non-conference play on Wednesday, when the team travels to Kean University for a 4 p.m. matchup with the Cougars.
