EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – Junior
Ed Motherway (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) tied his career-high with five goals Saturday to guide the Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team past Wilkes University 12-5 for their first MAC Freedom victory of the season.
Motherway's five goals equal his mark set earlier this season against Alvernia and also fellow classmate
Andrew Murray (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) for the most goals in a single game by a Valiant this season. Sophomore
Tyler Bentrewicz (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) and freshman
Erik Sparby (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) each netted two goals and senior
Connor Normandin (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) and sophomores
Robby Schartner (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) and
Jacob Cayton (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) each scored once for Manhattanville (4-8 overall, 1-2 MAC Freedom).
Defensively, freshman
Sam Hahn (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) and junior
Kyle Kelvas (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) set new career bests with seven and five ground balls respectively. In the faceoff circle, junior
Irving Hernandez (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) went 11-20, picking up four ground balls on the day.
Between the pipes junior
Zach Hoffman (Loudonville, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) made 15 saves, allowing just five goals on the afternoon to pick up his fourth win of the season.
Motherway put the Valiants ahead with two goals in the first period as the Valiant defense held the Colonels (0-11 overall, 0-3 MAC Freedom) scoreless in the opening frame. Goals from Bentrewicz and Sparby gave Manhattanville a four-goal lead in the second period, but Wilkes equaled the output with two goals of their own. Bentrewicz found the back of the net for his second goal of the day and Motherway scored with 1:23 left in the half to give Manhattanville a 6-2 lead at the halftime break.
Motherway was not done however, scoring the first goal of the second half midway through the third quarter. After two Colonel goals, Sparby scored his 13th goal of the season to give the Valiants an 8-4 lead after 45 minutes of action. Schartner's first goal of the season helped put the game out of reach to begin the final period of play. Goals from Motherway, Cayton, and Normandin put the final stamp on the 12-5 victory for Manhattanville.
The Valiants return to action when they host first place Eastern University Wednesday evening at GoValiants.com Field. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 P.M.
