#23 Manhattanville Slugs Past Brooklyn in Doubleheader Sweep

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College softball team, ranked 23rd in last week's NFCA Div. III National poll, ran its winning streak to nine straight games with 17-2 and 10-0 five-inning victories over Brooklyn College on Tuesday evening at the BC Softball Field.

Manhattanville (27-1) hit .517 over the 10 innings, with 14 Valiants recording at least one hit. Freshman Desiree Buboi (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran) went 3 for 3 with a pair of home runs, giving her a team-best nine long balls this season, while senior Alyx Scapperotti (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) led all players with four hits and four runs scored.

GAME ONE
Led by a homer and five RBIs from junior Alicia Marino (Mahopac, N.Y./Pleasantville), 11 different Valiants had a hit in the first game of the day, a 17-2 victory in five innings.

Marino went 2 for 3 and drove in a career-best five runs to lead the visitors, while Scapperotti had two hits and scored a game-high three times. Freshman Kristyn Pareres (Bronxville, N.Y./The Ursuline School) had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run while also earning the victory in her first collegiate appearance in the circle by allowing two runs and striking out six in five frames.

Buboi got Manhattanville started with a solo homer in the first inning, but Brooklyn came back with two runs in the bottom half to take a 2-1 lead after one. But it was all Valiants after that, as the visitors rattled off 16 straight runs.

The Valiants scored seven times on just four hits in the second frame, taking advantage of six Brooklyn errors. Sophomore Alexis Ventarola (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) drove in the first run with an RBI double, while Buboi and Marino added run-scoring singles during the inning.

Six more runs crossed the plate in the third inning, with the big hits coming via a two-run double off the bat of freshman Tori Dixon (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and an RBI double by Pareres. The visitors got their final three runs of the game thanks to one swing of the bat in the fourth, with Marino matching Buboi with her eighth homer of the year.

GAME TWO

Freshman Aarin Hartenstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) tossed a two-hit shutout and also recorded a game-high three hits at the plate in the second game of the day, a 10-0 win.

Hartenstein had three hits to lead the Valiant offense, including a pair of doubles to tie the school single-season record of 16 set by Nicole Oliva '09 in 2009. Dixon and Scapperotti both had a pair of hits, while freshman Sophia Chapelone (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) scored a game-high three runs as well.

Buboi again started the game off with a bang, following a Chapelone walk with a two-run homer to put the Valiants up early. Junior Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) added another run with a single to score Hartenstein and make the score 3-0 after half an inning.

After two unearned runs crossed the plate in the second, Manhattanville put the game away with five runs in the third. Freshman Alexa Grniet (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) scored a pair of runs with her first collegiate hit, and two more came home on a Chapelone double and a single from junior Brittany Deieso (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster).

In the circle, Hartenstein (3-0) struck out eight and allowed only two hits in five innings, earning her first collegiate shutout.

Manhattanville will return to action tomorrow, when the Valiants host another CUNYAC foe, Hunter College, for two games at Manhattanville Field beginning at 3 p.m.
