PURCHASE, N.Y. – Freshmen
Desiree Buboi (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran) and
Aarin Hartenstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) set program single-season records in runs and doubles, respectively, as Manhattanville College, ranked 22nd in the newest NFCA Division III national poll, swept Hunter College by the scores of 7-1 and 14-3 in non-conference softball action on Wednesday afternoon at Manhattanville Field.
Buboi scored a team-high four times to give her 44 on the year, breaking the previous record of 41 set by Michele Ribeiro '07 in 2006, while Hartenstein hit her 17th double of the year to break the record of current assistant coach Nicole Oliva '09 in 2009.
Buboi got on base in six of her seven plate appearances, going 2 for 3 with a homer and four runs scored, thanks in part to four walks. Junior
Adrena Daw (Crompond, N.Y./Walter Panas) led the team with four hits in six at-bats, while Hartenstein drove in a team-leading four runs on the day.
GAME ONE Manhattanville played its first seven-inning game since April 1 in game one, but still pulled away late for a 7-1 victory.
Freshman
Sophia Chapelone (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) went 2 for 3 and drove in a pair from the top of the order, while Buboi homered, walked three times and scored twice to break the school single-season runs record.
Buboi and junior
Alicia Marino (Mahopac, N.Y./Pleasantville) slugged back-to-back homers in the bottom of the first inning, as the pair continue their back-and-forth race for the team's homer lead. Buboi temporarily took a two-homer advantage with her team-best 10th long ball, but Marino followed right after with her ninth of the season to double the Valiant lead.
The Valiants got one more in the second on an RBI double from Chapelone, but the score remained 3-0 until Manhattanville added three more in the fifth. Hartenstein plated one with an RBI groundout, followed by a two-run single from Daw.
That was more than enough for sophomore
Alycia Feeney (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster), who earned her 15th win of the year by allowing one run on hits while striking out five in the complete-game win.
GAME TWO Manhattanville did not waste any time in the second game, scoring six times in the first inning and never looking back in a 14-3 win.
Hartenstein and freshman
Evonne Torres (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Pioneer) paced the Valiant attack with two hits and three RBIs each, while junior
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) also homered, drove in two and scored twice.
The Valiants did all their damage with two outs in the first to take control from the outset. With two on and two out, Torres laced a two-run double to get the home team on the board. Back-to-back RBI singles from Hartenstein and Daw doubled the lead, and Diemicke followed with a two-run homer to left, putting the Valiants up by six after one.
Manhattanville added three more in the second, beginning with a solo homer from sophomore
Alexis Ventarola (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) and followed by back-to-back run-scoring doubles from Marino and Torres. Five more runs crossed the plate in the third inning on an RBI double from Chapelone, RBI singles from Buboi and Marino, and finally Hartenstein's record-breaking double that plated a pair.
Freshman
Julianna Orrico (Bronx, N.Y./Preston) worked around some late difficulties to remain undefeated on the season, earning her 10th win by allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings.
Manhattanville will make its final road trip of the regular season on Saturday, when the Valiants travel to Delaware Valley University for two MAC Freedom contests beginning at 1 p.m.
