Seven-Run Sixth Dooms Valiants in MAC Freedom Battle With DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Manhattanville College baseball team fell to DeSales University in a MAC Freedom matchup Friday after the Bulldogs plated seven runs in the sixth inning to come from behind and upend the Valiants 11-5.

Freshman Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) led the offensive attack for the Valiants 14-7 overall, 6-2 MAC Freedom), racking up three hits, and RBI and a run scored.   Junior John Delahanty (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) also had two hits on the day and senior Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) added a hit and two runs scored for Manhattanville.

Sophomore Pat Badia (Somers, N.Y./Somers) continued his strong performance on the mound for Manhattanville, allowing just three runs over five innings pitched with two strikeouts.  However the Valiants were unable to hold the lead as the Bulldogs scored seven runs in the sixth inning to take the lead.

The Valiants took the early lead over the Bulldogs (13-9 overall, 5-3 MAC Freedom) in the third inning with three runs in the top half of the frame.  Senior Jake McGrath (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane) scored the game's first run on a throwing error by DeSales first baseman Conner Lafferty.  Junior Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) doubled the Valiant lead with an RBI single to left center, and junior Joe Anselmi (North Rockland, N.Y./North Rockland) capped off the three run inning with an RBI groundout.

In the sixth, Scoggins scored on a fielder's choice groundout from senior Chris Lattarulo (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) to give the Valiants a 4-0 lead but the Bulldogs bats came to life in the bottom half of the frame.

Badia faced three batters to begin the inning before being replaced by junior John Moschetti (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas).  Moschetti and Badia were charged with three earned runs apiece as DeSales took a 6-4 lead with no outs in the inning.  Senior David Mangum (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and sophomore John Fanelli (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) combined to work out of the inning but not before the Bulldogs tacked on another run to lead 7-4 through six innings of play.

Scoggins attempted to rally the Valiants with an RBI single to cut the deficit to two runs but the Valiants could not manufacture a run after that.  The Bulldogs scored four more runs over their final two at bats of the game to take game one of the series 11-5.

Tyler Cooperman earned his fifth win of the season for DeSales while Moschetti suffered his first loss of the season.

Due to the poor weather forecasted for Purchase on Saturday, the Valiants doubleheader against the Bulldogs has been postponed until Sunday.  The two teams will square off with game one beginning at 1:00 P.M. to wrap up the season series.
