Volleyball's Junior Trio Rises Up to Take Down King's (Pa.) in MAC Freedom Opener

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The junior trio of Meagan Dattoma (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue), Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y./Christ the King) and Asia Reid (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nellie A. Thornton High School) combined for 40 kills in four sets as the Manhattanville College women's volleyball team started its MAC Freedom schedule with a 3-1 (24-26, 25-21, 25-10, 25-20) victory over King's (Pa.) College at a raucous Kennedy Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Manhattanville (4-1, 1-0 MAC Freedom) had a great night on the attack against the Lady Monarchs, as five Valiants had more kills than the visitors' top attacker. Dattoma led all players with a career-high 14 kills and also added a career-best 15 digs for a second straight double-double. Mackey was nearly flawless on the night, putting down 13 kills with only one error (.364 hitting) and adding a match-best five blocks, while Reid also put down 13 kills for the home team.

Freshman Austen Brauer (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) and sophomore Laura LiVolsi (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) also chipped in eight and seven kills, respectively, in the win.

In addition, senior Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) posted a huge double-double with 42 assists and 15 digs, while classmate Adrianna Alves (New Rochelle, N.Y./Maria Regina) dug out a match- and career-high 28 balls and fellow senior Sam Miano (Bronx, N.Y./Maria Regina) added eight digs of her own.

For the night, Manhattanville put down 57 kills on 172 attacks (.174), compared to 33 kills on 144 attacks (.090) for King's (5-2, 0-1 MAC Freedom).

The Valiants arguably should have won all four sets, as the home team let three set points slip away in dropping the opening frame, 26-24. But Manhattanville bounced back in the second set, storming back from an early 13-7 deficit to pull out a 25-21 win. Alves had 11 digs in the second stanza alone to lead the team defensively.

Manhattanville put on a clinic in the third set, hitting .464 with 15 kills and two errors on 28 attempts while limiting King's to only three kills in a 25-10 win. Reid (five kills) and Dattoma (four kills) single-handedly had more kills than the entire Lady Monarchs squad in the frame, as the home team jumped out to an 18-5 lead and never looked back.

The home team ran out to an early lead again in the fourth set, winning seven of the first nine points. King's used a 7-2 run to knot the score at 15, but the Valiants closed the set on a 10-5 run to pick up the crucial MAC Freedom victory.

Manhattanville will look to keep the momentum going this weekend, when the Valiants take on Centenary (N.J.) University and Notre Dame of Maryland University in a tri-match at Centenary beginning at 10 a.m.
