Women's Volleyball Rolls Past Centenary and Notre Dame (Md.) in Tri-Match Sweep

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Junior Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y./Christ the King) led the Valiants with 17 kills to become the 11th player in program history to record 500 kills for a career as the Manhattanville College women's volleyball team swept host Centenary (N.J.) University and Notre Dame of Maryland University by 3-0 scores on Saturday at John Reeves Recreation Center.

Mackey led the Valiants with 17 kills and a .389 hitting percentage in the two matches, giving her 514 for her career and moving her within 35 of Karen Donovan '89 for 10th place all-time at the school.

She was followed by classmate Meagan Dattoma (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) with 13 kills and sophomore Laura LiVolsi (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) added 12 kills and a team-best seven service aces, while senior Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) chipped in with 42 assists to surpass the 2,500-assist mark for her record-breaking career.

Manhattanville needed only 61 minutes in which to dispatch Centenary in the first match of the day, defeating the Cyclones by a 3-0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-6) score. Mackey led the Valiants by hitting .615 with nine kills on 13 attempts, and she was helped by LiVolsi with nine kills, five aces and four digs. Fellow junior Asia Reid (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nellie A. Thornton High School) added seven kills on .429 hitting for the Valiants, who hit .358 as a team with 32 kills and only eight errors on 67 attempts.

A big run on the serve of senior Sam Miano (Bronx, N.Y./Maria Regina) broke open the first set, as a Mackey kill made the score 7-5 and then the visitors won nine straight on Miano's serve to open up a commanding 16-6 lead.

After battling a little in the second set, Manhattanville closed things out with a dominant final frame, putting down 10 kills without an error. Up by six at 12-6, again Mackey regained serve with a kill and then LiVolsi took over from there, serving the final 12 points (including four aces) to close out the set and the match.

Manhattanville received more of a challenge in its second match of the day, but the Valiants still managed a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-21) win over Notre Dame (Md.) to hand the Gators their first loss of the season. Dattoma led the squad this time around with a team-best nine kills and eight digs, followed closely by Mackey with eight put downs.

The Valiants were down 10-8 in the first set before a 9-2 run catapulted the team ahead by a 17-12 score, and the squad outscored the Gators 8-5 the rest of the way to take the opening frame. Manhattanville jumped on Notre Dame early in the second stanza, using six straight points on LiVolsi's serve to open up a 12-5 lead and cruise to the two-set advantage.

The third set was easily the most competitive of the day, featuring 11 ties and five lead changes. With the match tied at 21 after a Notre Dame service error, two Gator attack errors were followed up by back-to-back aces from LiVolsi yet again to seal the match and complete the sweep.

Manhattanville (6-1) will look to keep its winning ways going on Tuesday night, when the Valiants get back into MAC Freedom play with another pivotal contest at Wilkes University beginning at 7 p.m.
