WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Manhattanville College women's volleyball team had its chances in all three sets, but the Valiants could not get the big points when they needed them as the squad dropped a 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 25-21) decision to Wilkes University in MAC Freedom action on Tuesday night at the Marts Center.
Junior
Asia Reid (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nellie A. Thornton High School) was the top hitter for Manhattanville (6-2, 1-1 MAC Freedom) in the loss, putting down a match-high 11 kills on 24 attempts (.292 hitting) while also adding two blocks. Junior
Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y./Christ the King) added eight kills and senior
Sam Miano (Bronx, N.Y./Maria Regina) recorded a season-best 19 digs to lead the Valiants.
Wilkes (6-6, 1-1 MAC Freedom) was led by Ally Paskas, who had 10 kills and 11 digs for the match's only double-double, and Jamey Mikovich, who added eight kills and a match-best three blocks.
In an incredibly even match that featured 28 total ties and 12 different lead changes, only a few points ended up deciding a victor between the two teams on Tuesday.
In the opening set, Manhattanville battled back from an early deficit to earn five straight points and take a 16-12 lead, but Wilkes returned the favor to tie the match at 18. The teams then alternated the next 10 points to keep the score tied at 23 before back-to-back Valiant errors handed the Lady Colonels the opening set.
The middle stanza was also tightly contested, as the visitors showed some heart by coming back from a 20-14 deficit to tie the score at 23. Manhattanville staved off one set point thanks to a Wilkes attack error, but a Valiant error and a Paskas kill gave the home team another very close win and a commanding two-set edge.
Manhattanville used a 9-3 run to take a 10-9 lead in the third frame, but Wilkes followed up with an 8-3 run of its own to grab back the lead at 17-13. The Valiants got within two points on four separate occasions down the stretch, but the team could get no closer as the Lady Colonels closed out the set and the match with the final two points.
The Valiants will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday, when the team heads into the city to take on Hunter College and Ramapo College at the Hunter Tri-Match beginning at 10 a.m.
