Women's Volleyball Battles Tough in Two Close Losses at Hunter Tri-Match

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's volleyball team hung tough with a pair of non-conference foes on Saturday at the Hunter College Tri-Match, but the Valiants suffered a pair of very close 3-0 defeats to the host Hawks and Ramapo College on Saturday.

Junior Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y./Christ the King) led Manhattanville (6-4) with 22 kills and a .409 hitting percentage over the six sets, making only four errors in her 44 attempts, while also chipping in a team-best six blocks. Senior Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) added 55 assists and 16 digs for the visitors as well, in the process becoming the seventh player in program history to record 1,000 digs for a career.

Manhattanville fought hard against the host Hawks in the first match of the day, but the Valiants came up just short in all three sets in a close 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-22) defeat.

Mackey led Manhattanville with 10 kills and also added a match-high five blocks against Hunter, while juniors Meagan Dattoma (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and Asia Reid (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nellie A. Thornton High School) and sophomore Laura LiVolsi (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) all had six kills apiece.

Julia Connolly led Hunter (9-7) with 18 kills on .471 hitting, followed by Taylor Kerr-Haiduk with 13 kills.

The match was a very close contest on both sides, as neither team earned a lead of more than four points the entire match. Hunter earned the win largely due to its .257 hitting percentage, as the Hawks put down 43 kills with only 17 errors, while Manhattanville hit just .067 with 30 kills with 22 miscues.

The second match was just as competitive, as Manhattanville came up just short to Ramapo in a rematch of last year's ECAC Metro/Upstate Championships, falling by a tight 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 26-24) score.

The tandem of Mackey and classmate Meagan Dattoma (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) both put down a team-leading 12 kills in the loss, with Mackey hitting .500 thanks to only two errors on 20 attempts. Quinabo chipped in a double-double with 31 assists and 14 digs, while senior Sam Miano (Bronx, N.Y./Maria Regina) added a match-high 16 digs for the Valiants as well.

Just as she did in the postseason last year, Larysa Iwaskiw was huge for Ramapo (13-3) in the win, putting down 29 of her team's 52 kills and also adding 14 digs.

Manhattanville will return to action on Wednesday with another big MAC Freedom matchup, as the Valiants host Misericordia University for a 7 p.m. contest at Kennedy Gymnasium.
