Asia Reid (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nellie A. Thornton High School) led all players with 10 kills and classmate
Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y./Christ the King) added eight kills on .533 hitting as the Manhattanville College women's volleyball team picked up a crucial and impressive 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-9) victory over Misericordia University in MAC Freedom play on Wednesday night at Kennedy Gym.
Manhattanville (7-4, 2-1 MAC Freedom) never trailed in the victory, which moves the team into a tie for second place in the conference standings with DeSales University, one match back of AVCA #13 Eastern University. The Valiants also remain a perfect 5-0 at home this season with two conference matches left on the Kennedy court.
Reid had 10 kills and a match-high three blocks for the Valiants, who hit .264 as a team for the match. Mackey added eight kills without an error to move into 10th place on the school's all-time list with 552 career kills, while a trio of Valiants – seniors
Adrianna Alves (New Rochelle, N.Y./Maria Regina) and
Sam Miano (Bronx, N.Y./Maria Regina) and junior
Meagan Dattoma (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) – all pitched in with a match-high 10 digs
In a match the Valiants needed to win in the race for the postseason, Manhattanville exploded out of the gates, hitting .414 with 14 kills and two errors on 29 attacks in a dominant first set. The Valiants raced out to a 10-1 lead behind three kills from Reid, and limited Misericordia (6-11, 1-2 MAC Freedom) to only five kills in jumping out to the one-set lead.
Manhattanville cooled off somewhat in the second set, but still put down 10 kills to take the middle stanza as well. With the set tied at four, the home team won the next four points to grab an 8-4 lead, as part of a 13-3 run that put the frame away.
The Valiants returned to form in the final set, hitting .391 with 11 kills and two errors on 23 attacks while also limiting Misericordia to just three kills. After opening up a 9-6 lead to start the frame, Manhattanville closed on a 16-3 run, led by three aces from sophomore
Laura LiVolsi (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) and five points each on the serves of LiVolsi and Mackey.
Manhattanville will look to carry over its MAC Freedom momentum to Saturday's Middle Atlantic Conference Crossover event, as the Valiants travel to Hood College to take on the Blazers and Alvernia University of the MAC Commonwealth beginning at 1 p.m.
