GENEVA, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College field hockey team battled, but came up short against ninth-ranked William Smith College Saturday in the opening round of the William Smith Classic.
Â
The Valiants (3-3 overall) battled the Herons (5-1 overall) to a scoreless draw for more of the first half before William Smith broke through in the 26th minute for their first of four goals on the day.
Â
Manhattanville struggled to get an offensive attack going against the powerful Herons, earning just one shot attempt on the day, coming from senior
Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands/Willen de Zwigger College) on a penalty corner in the second half.
Â
Junior goaltender
Kaitlin Halloran (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) made 10 saves on the day, a season-high, but it was not enough to stop the Herons. Fellow classmate Hailey Linkroum added a defensive save as well.
Â
Manhattanville will now face Saint Lawrence tomorrow morning at 11:00 am in their final game at the annual tournament.Â
