Smits-Stys Combination Strikes Three Times to Push Valiants Past Saints 3-2

GENEVA, N.Y. – The powerful duo of senior Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands/Willen de Zwigger College) and junior Melissa Stys (Pequannock, N.J./Kent School) connected on three penalty corners, including one on the final play of the game to lift the Valiant field hockey team past Saint Lawrence 3-2 at the Wiliam Smith Classic.

Smits found the back of the cage twice and connected with Stys for the game-winner on an untimed play to end regulation.  The duo has combined for eight of Manhattanville's 13 goals this season, and individually have recorded a point on 12 of 13 goals.

For Smits her two goals were her sixth and seventh goals of the season, the most scored in the MAC Freedom this season.  Stys two assists also gave her seven for the year, also leading the conference in that category.

The Valiants (4-3 overall) trailed late in the first half after the Saints scored in the 18th minute before Smits scored her first of the game on a blast from the top of the circle off of a penalty corner inserted by Stys.  The duo connected for the second time in a similar manner in the 50th minute to give Manhattanville a 2-1 lead midway through the second half.

The Saints leveled the score eight minutes later when Lucy Stillman beat sophomore goalkeeper Alexandra Breen with a deflected shot to make it a 2-2 game.

It took until the final play of the game for Manhattanville to knock home the game-winner, this time with Smits firing a ball back to Stys off of an untimed penalty corner for the deflection goal to give the Valiants their fourth win of the season.

The Valiants continue their extended road schedule next week when they travel to Conencticut College on Wednesday before opening MAC Freedom play against Delaware Valley on Friday.
