Valiants Outlast Camels in Shootout Thriller

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands/Willen de Zwigger College) scored on a reverse sweep in the second round of a shootout for the game's only goal as Manhattanville outlasted Connecticut College Wednesday evening.

110 minutes of action was not enough to determine a winner at Silfen Field, as the Valiants (5-3 overall) and Camels (0-4 overall) battled to a scoreless draw through two overtime periods and headed into a shootout.

In the opening best-of-five round, freshman Robin Boot (Bedum, Netherlands/H.N. Werkman College) was the only Valiant to find the back of the cage, while the Camels were also able to put home one attempt as well.  After remaining tied 1-1 through the first five shooters, the teams entered into a sudden-victory situation.  After a Camel goal on their first attempt, Boot delivered with another goal for the Valiants to keep the team alive.  After a stop by junior goalkeeper Kaitlin Halloran (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East), the stage was set for Smits to seal the victory for Manhattanville.

Despite facing relentless pressure from the Camels throughout the game, having been outshot 22-5 and defending 19 penalty corners, Halloran stood tall in cage, shutting down Camel attackers over the entire course of the night.  The Nesconset native made 11 saves, the third most in her career to her first shutout and fourth win of the year.

In the first overtime period, Halloran made a great blocker save along the near post on a one-on-one situation and followed up the save with another great stop on a high shot just over a minute later.  In the second overtime period Halloran once again made a game-saving save to keep the Valiants alive, and later made a stop in the second round of the shootout to set the stage for Smits' game-winner.

With the win the Valiants have now won five of their first eight games for just the fourth time in the last decade.  The team will look to continue its hot start Friday when they travel to Doylestown, Pa. to take on Delaware Valley in their MAC Freedom opener at 7:00 pm.
