Diemicke and the Valiant Defense Limit New Paltz to a Scoreless Draw

PURCHASE, N.Y. – It turned out that 110 minutes of action was not enough to separate Manhattanville College and SUNY New Paltz on Saturday afternoon, as the two teams battled to a 0-0 (2OT) draw in non-conference women's soccer action at GoValiants.com Field.

The match may have been a defensive struggle but it was not without numerous great opportunities on both ends of the field. New Paltz finished the day with a slight 19-17 edge in total shots, as both senior keeper Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) and New Paltz goalie Katelyn Cordero were kept busy all afternoon long.

Diemicke finished the match with 12 stops, moving her into sixth place all-time at Manhattanville in both career saves (418) and career shutouts (eight). Cordero only needed to make four saves to keep her sheet clean for the Hawks.

Manhattanville had its best chance of regulation in the 56th minute with a flurry of three shots in about 15 seconds. Sophomore Lauren Vallarelli (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) took a shot that Cordero dove to keep out of her net, and that was followed by a shot from senior Alex Carlbom (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kents Hill School) that a defender just got a leg on to keep from heading toward goal.

New Paltz had a golden opportunity in the 86th minute when Skye Kaler found herself wide open in front of the Valiant net, but Diemicke sprung off her line to smother the shot attempt from point-blank range and help send the match into overtime.

Diemicke made two more saves in both of the two 10-minute overtime periods to keep New Paltz off the board and earn her team a tie.

In addition to Diemicke's excellent play, the Valiant defensive unit of junior Mackenzie Trainor (Port Jervis, N.Y./Port Jervis), sophomores Alex Gardner (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) and Dany Swidler (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines), and senior Kerri Durkin (Mahopac, N.Y./John F. Kennedy Catholic) were stellar all afternoon long in containing the New Paltz attack and limiting the amount of quality chances on the Valiant net.

Manhattanville will look to get back in the win column on Tuesday, when the Valiants host Maritime (N.Y.) College for a 5 p.m. match at GoValiants.com Field.
