PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior
Kerri Durkin (Mahopac, N.Y./John F. Kennedy Catholic) recorded her second career multi-goal game and sophomore
Joanna Karp (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK) added a career-high four points on a goal and two assists as the Manhattanville College women's soccer team dominated Maritime (N.Y.) College in a 5-0 non-conference victory on Tuesday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.
Durkin led the way for Manhattanville (2-3-1) with her first two-goal game since her freshman season of 2013, and Karp matched her in points with her second collegiate goal and the first two assists of her Valiant career. Freshman
Samira Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y./Kungsholmens Gymnasium) netted her team-leading third goal of the season and sophomore
Lauren Vallarelli (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) also scored for the home team in the win.
The Valiants controlled the match in all facets against the Privateers, holding near total possession and accumulating a 41-1 advantage in shots. The margin of victory would have much greater if not for the excellent play of Maritime keeper Cammie Havens, who matched her season-high with 19 saves, including several stellar diving efforts.
Manhattanville got on the board first in the 14th minute thanks to Vallarelli, who registered the eventual match-winning tally by dribbling into the box and picking the far corner. That one-goal advantage stood for over 20 minutes before Karp netted her first of the season after she took a pass from the sideline off the foot of senior
Melissa Barcia (Somers, N.Y./Somers) and put the ball inside the left post.
Durkin got her first of the match in the 40th minute, firing a rocket from 25 yards that snuck under the crossbar to give the home team a 3-0 lead at the half. Manhattanville outshot Maritime 23-0 in the opening 45 minutes, forcing Havens to make 11 saves to keep her team close.
Durkin added her second of the day just 2:44 into the second half following a throughball from Karp. Davis completed the scoring in the 68th minute, as she converted a cross from freshman
Sunny Tonnesen (Oslo, Norway/EF Academy).
Senior
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) did not see a shot over the opening 45 minutes but still picked up the win for Manhattanville. Freshman
Gabriella Beltrami (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) made one save in 22:09 of action and classmate
Cailyn Burgos (West Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) did not face an attempt in her 22:51 of play during the second half as well.
Manhattanville will leave Purchase, N.Y., for the first time all season on Thursday, when the Valiants travel north to Western Connecticut State University for a 4 p.m. match with the Colonials.
