Parra's Second Straight Hat Trick Leads Men's Soccer to 8-0 Win over John Jay

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior Omar Parra (Gulfport, Miss./Gulfport) recorded a first-half hat trick for the second straight match and five other Valiants scored as well to lead Manhattanville College to an 8-0 victory over John Jay College in non-conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.

Parra had another very productive day for Manhattanville (5-3-0) in the win, scoring three times for the second straight outing. His hat trick marks the first time a Valiant registered back-to-back hat tricks since All-American Eros Olazabal '13 netted seven goals in two games against Farmingdale State College and Albright College on the exact same dates in 2011.

Ten Valiants recorded at least one point in the victory, led by Parra with his three markers and one assist for a career-high seven points. Three Manhattanville players - sophomore Jack Balasiano (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and freshmen Mateo Herron (Bogota, Colombia/Colegio Mayor de los Andes) and Cristian Araujo (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto) - scored their first collegiate goals on the afternoon, while juniors Robin Schaufele (Kalix, Sweden/Kungsfaegeln) and Wes Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) also found the net in the win.

Manhattanville struck first in the fifth minute when freshman Konnor Kesselring (Montverde, Fla./Montverde Academy) served a corner kick into the middle of the box for Herron, and the midfielder touched the ball from the right foot to the left before sending it into the corner of the net for his first goal and Kesselring's first career point. Schaufele gave the Valiants a two-goal advantage in the 19th minute with a good individual effort, as he stole a pass back to John Jay keeper Alexandros Taliotis and then tapped the ball into an empty net for his third goal of the year.

Parra then doubled the Manhattanville lead single-handedly in the span of 100 seconds. He buried a shot from the middle of the box at 24:06 off a pass from freshman Nicolas Capri (Curitiba, Brazil/Montverde Academy), and then scored on a penalty kick at 25:46 after Balasiano was taken down in the box.

Balasiano got on the scoresheet himself in the 30th minute at the end of a nice play, as Parra freed freshman Ingebreth Mossige (Bryne, Norway/Bryne Videregående Skule) down the near endline and the freshman sent a great ball across the box for the put away. Parra then completed his hat trick in the 35th minute, when he slid at the back post to deposit a cross from senior Simon Espinosa (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) into the net.

Manhattanville lowered the intensity somewhat in the second half, but still managed to score two more times. Araujo scored the first of his career off of a beautiful cross from Capri in the 75th minute, and Wilson completed the scoring in the 80th minute by beating Taliotis after a through ball from Araujo created a one-on-one chance.

For the match, Manhattanville outshot John Jay by a 25-5 margin, including a 16-2 edge in shots on goal. Graduate student Norbi Bengyel (Budapest, Hungary/PEAC School for Elite Athletes) earned his second straight win in goal, making two saves in 75:03 of action, while junior James McTighe (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) came on for the final 14:57 to finish off the shutout.

Manhattanville will return to action on Monday, when the Valiants travel to Brooklyn College for a 4 p.m. match with the Bulldogs.
