Men's Soccer Continues Hot Start, Blanks NYU 2-0

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior Omar Parra (Gulfport, Miss./Gulfport) continued his torrid start to the season, scoring his third goal of the season to help propel the Valiant men's soccer team past New York University 2-0 Saturday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.

For the second consecutive game, Parra's goal proved to be the game-winner, this finishing off a cross from junior Robin Schaufele (Kalix, Sweden/Kungsfaegeln) with a beautiful header that beat Violet goalkeeper Lucas Doucette in the 27th minute of the first half.

The Valiants (2-0 overall) had several other opportunities in the first half, but Doucette made a few great saves to keep the game 1-0 at the halftime break.

"I thought it was a very mature performance from the guys today," said head coach Kyle Dezotell.  "While NYU certainly had their fair share of possession, I felt like we were in control of the game throughout and were unlucky not to have converted a few more chances."

Manhattanville's defense shut down the Violet attack the rest of the way, allowing just one shot on goal in the second half.  The Valiants added an insurance goal in the 69th minute when junior Oskar Martinsson (Orust, Sweden/Uddevalla Gymnasieskola) got behind the back line on a through ball from freshman Nicolas Capri (Curitiba, Brazil/Montverde Academy), and beat a charging Doucette inside the right post for his first goal of the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Tim Carsting (Falun, Sweden/Soltorgsgymnasiet) sealed the deal with his second consecutive shutout to begin his collegiate career.  The Swedish native made four saves on the day to earn his second win.

"Any day you beat a University Athletic Association team 2-0 it is a good day," explained Dezotell.  "I know the guys are looking forward to another great test at Vassar on Tuesday."

That contest against the Brewers is scheduled for 4:00 pm.  Live coverage of the game can be found at GoValiants.com.
