POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – A goal in the 90th minute by Brewer defender Tyler Gilmore dropped the Valiant men's soccer team as Manhattanville fell to Vassar 2-1 Tuesday afternoon.
For the Valiants, the tough loss is their first of the season, falling to 2-1 on the season after defeating Elms College and New York University to begin the year.
Manhattanville held a lead for the majority of the game, took a 1-0 lead in the second half after junior
Oskar Martinsson (Orust, Sweden/Uddevalla Gymnasieskola) scored his second goal of the season on a cross from classmate
Robin Schaufele (Kalix, Sweden/Kungsfaegeln). The Valiants appeared to be on their way to their third consecutive victory before Gilmore beat reigning Division III National Player of the week
Tim Carsting (Falun, Sweden/Soltorgsgymnasiet) to level the score in the 84th minute. For Carsting, it was the first goal he conceded this season, putting an end to his school record for longest scoreless streak to begin a career at 263:31.
Gilmore broke the Valiants' hearts in the final minute of regulation, heading in a cross off of a corner kick from Hayden Van Brewer with 19 seconds remaining in the second half to give Vassar their third win of the season and remain unbeaten in 2016.
"Credit must be given to Vassar for the way they played today and the pressure they put us under throughout the 90 minutes. Vassar play one of the most expansive brands of soccer imaginable and combined with being a road game and on their large grass field this was always going to be a very difficult game for us," said head coach
Kyle Dezotell.
Manhattanville struggled offensively for the first time this season, trailing in the shots category 22-6 for the game. The Valiants were able to get just three shots on target compared to ten from Vassar. Carsting made eight saves on the afternoon but it was not enough as the Brewer attack proved to be too much for Manhattanville Tuesday.
"I thought our guys battled extremely hard but ultimately weren't able to hang on. I always tell the guys we're in this together and I'll always take blame first, I made a few tactical changes and decisions because of Vassar's style and with this being our third game in six days I just wasn't sure if we would have the legs to play our normal style. In hindsight there are a few things I would adjust that certainly could have made a difference," said Dezotell.
The first-year head coach also commented, "I am very pleased with the way the guys battled on the road for 83 minutes against a very good opponent. We'll learn our lessons and we are eager to get back on the training pitch tomorrow, spending some time working on a few specific areas we know we can improve as we prepare to play two very tough opponents this weekend. Our early season schedule is easily one of the toughest in the region and we will be better for it when we reach conference play in October."
The Valiants will look to bounce back this weekend when they take on two quality opponents at the Mayor's Cup Tournament hosted by SUNY Oneonta. Manhattanville squares off against Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute Friday afternoon before taking on the nationally ranked hosts on Saturday.
