Men's Hockey Explodes for Nine Goals in 9-2 Rout of SUNY Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Cory Anderson (Bakersfield, Calif./Notre Dame Hounds (SJHL)) and freshman Ryan Jackson (Montreal, Que./Hawkesbury Hawks (CCHL)) scored two goals each to lead a potent offensive attack as the Manhattanville College men's hockey team emphatically snapped its two-game losing streak with a 9-2 victory over SUNY Cortland in non-conference action on Saturday night at Alumni Arena.

Manhattanville (8-7-0) had no trouble finding the net on Saturday night, scoring two times in each of the first two periods before pouring on the offense with five goals in the third. Jackson scored the first two goals of his career and Anderson added an assist to his two-goal evening, while junior Stephen Gaul (Downers Grove, Ill./Springfield Pics (USPHL)) led all scorers with a career-high four points on a goal and three assists.

Senior assistant captain Adam Platt (Trumbull, Conn./Springfield Pics (USPHL)) and classmate Tanner Hicks (Calgary, Alta./Brooks Bandits (AJHL)) both had three-assist nights as well for the visitors, who matched their season-high in goals on the night.

Manhattanville scored twice in 43 seconds to take control of the game in the first period. Gaul opened the scoring at the 7:30 mark, as Anderson forced a turnover in the offensive zone and then fed Gaul coming in from the circle for his fourth goal of the season. Less than a minute later, Platt streaked down the left side and fed sophomore Matt Lippa (Richmond Hill, Ont./Oakville Blades (OJHL)) in the slot for his team-leading 10th tally of the year.

The Valiants scored once early and once late in the middle frame to take a commanding 4-1 lead into the third period. Junior Thimmy Garbenius (Nykvarn, Sweden/Sodertalje SK (SWE)) tipped home a Platt shot from the far wing 1:42 into the second stanza, and then junior Kevin Loppatto (Plano, Texas/Springfield Pics (USPHL)) made it a three-goal game by finishing off a two-on-one rush with his third goal of the season.

The goals kept coming for Manhattanville in the third period, with Anderson and Jackson combining for four of the team's five scores in the frame. Anderson netted his first of the night at 7:16, and then sophomore Bryan Platt (Trumbull, Conn./Springfield Pics (USPHL)) added to the tally exactly three minutes later, when he finished off a two-Platts-on-none rush when his brother unselfishly found him for an easy put away.

Jackson netted his first career goal at the 13:52 mark with a one-timer on the power play, followed by Anderson's second of the night, also on the power play, with 2:17 left in the period. Jackson put an exclamation point on the evening with his second goal, corralling a loose puck in the slot and wristing a shot under the crossbar with 1:27 remaining.

Sophomore Tyler Feaver (Whitby, Ont./Whitby Fury (OJHL)) was the beneficiary of all the offense, as he turned aside 30-of-32 shots to pick up his sixth win of the year. Manhattanville finished the game with a 45-32 edge in shots.

Manhattanville will now settle in for seven straight games at the friendly confines of Playland Ice Casino, beginning with a rare Friday afternoon matchup against Williams College starting at 3 p.m.
