Martinsson's Late Goal Not Enough for Men's Soccer in 2-1 Loss at Misericordia

DALLAS, P.A. – The Manhattanville College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision Saturday night against Misericordia University in MAC Freedom Conference play.

Senior Oskar Martinsson (Orust, Sweden/Uddevalla Gymnasieskola) scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season for the Valiants (6-8, 1-3 MAC Freedom). After keeping the Cougars (1-12-1, 1-2-1 MAC Freedom) off the board for nearly 70 minutes, Manhattanville's defense conceded two goals in 68 seconds that wound up being just enough for Misericordia.

The first half transpired quickly and quietly, as the two teams managed just nine shots total, with Manhattanville goalkeeper Tim Carsting (Falun, Sweden/Soltorgsgymnasiet) and Misericordia goalkeeper Patrick Hoffman each recording one save apiece. In the 23rd minute, Martinsson had an opportunity from about 20 yards out off a counter-attack from the Valiants, but Hoffman knocked it over the crossbar. Carsting knocked Michael Ciardullo's shot from 30 yards out over the end line in the 31st minute.

Carsting started the second half with two saves and the Valiants held on Misericordia's first four corner kicks, but, off the fifth corner taken by Tristan Snyder and a pass from Dylan Molyneaux, Curtis Brewer headed home his first goal of the season to break the scoreless draw. Moments later, off a turnover in the Manhattanville defensive zone, Devin Marriott grabbed a loose ball on the left side, dribbled into the 18-yard box, and went cross-goal, beating Carsting inside the right post.

In the 83rd minute, Martinsson got Manhattanville on the board, taking a beautiful backheel touch pass from junior Mateo Herron (Bogota, Colombia/Colegio Mayor de los Andes) and burying a shot inside the right post. Martinsson also took Manhattanville's last shot of the night in the 88th minute, but Hoffman grabbed the attempt well in front of the net.

The Valiants return to GoValiants.com Field Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m. affair with the Devils of FDU-Florham.
