DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Delaware Valley University scored the final three goals of the game, including the game-winner from Sarah Young with 1:50 left in the first overtime period, as the Aggies dealt the Manhattanville College women's soccer team a tough 3-2 (OT) loss in MAC Freedom action on Saturday afternoon at Robert A. Lipinski Field.
Freshmen
Ashley Pacheco (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Pelham Prep) and
Jess Roman (Weston, Fla./NSU University School) scored for Manhattanville (3-9-1, 0-6-0 MAC Freedom), which built up a 2-0 lead after 45 minutes but could not hold it. Taylor Boyer and Samantha Greim also scored for Delaware Valley (3-12-1, 1-5-0 MAC Freedom) in the win.
After losing its two-goal lead, Manhattanville came out strong in the overtime period. Pacheco had the first three shots of extra time, including a shot off the crossbar that nearly ended the match in the 95th minute. Delaware Valley's luck continued in the 98th minute, when a Young free kick caromed off a Valiant foot and into the net for the game-winning score.
The Valiants controlled play in the first half, scoring twice and keeping the Aggies from putting a shot on the goal of senior
Jules Browne (Dover Plains, N.Y./Dover). Pacheco got the visitors on the board first in the eighth minute, when she maneuvered through the Aggie defense and beat DelVal keeper Madelyne Medina from the middle of the box for her fourth goal of the year.
Roman doubled the Manhattanville lead in the 29th minute with a long-range shot that slipped through the hands of Medina for her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Delaware Valley held a 4-3 edge in shots over the opening 45 minutes of play, but the Valiants had the only two on-target attempts and both found the back of the net.
There were more plentiful scoring chances for both teams in the second half, with the two sides combining for 17 attempts toward goal. Manhattanville peppered Medina with eight on-target tries in the final 45 minutes, but it was Delaware Valley that scored twice to knot the score at the end of regulation. Boyer made it a one-goal game in the 77th minute and then Greim tied the score with 4:25 remaining off a Boyer assist.
Manhattanville finished the match with a 16-12 edge in shots, doubling up the Aggies with 12 shots on goal compared to six for the home team. However, Medina kept her team in the match by making nine saves, while Browne finished with three saves for the Valiants.
Manhattanville will celebrate Senior Night on Tuesday, when the Valiants host Brooklyn College in their non-conference finale beginning at 7 p.m.
