EWING, N.J. – In the final non-conference match of the season, the Manhattanville College men's soccer team posted its third straight win with a 2-1 victory over The College of New Jersey on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore
Cristian Araujo (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto) tallied three points to lead the Valiants (6-5), while freshman
Pablo Bravo Olle (Barcelona, Spain/LFG Bon Soleil) added what wound up being the game-winning goal for Manhattanville. Fellow freshman
Danny Ayala (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), making just his second start of the season, made five saves and held tough on a number of TCNJ (4-6-2) offensive rushes.
Araujo notched his fourth goal of the season exactly eight minutes in off a through ball into the right side of the box from freshman
Jon Kyriakidis (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y./Pleasantville); Araujo got a touch on the ball just in front of TCNJ's fast-closing goalkeeper Michael Kayal. Ayala had stopped Peter Dresch from 12 yards out off a cross from Matt Skinner 30 seconds prior.
Kyriakidis had an opportunity from the top right of the box in the 34th minute, but didn't get enough lift on his lob, and Kayal snatched the shot out of mid-air. Both teams finished the opening 45 minutes with six shots apiece.
Another cross into the box from Skinner less than 10 minutes into the second half nearly squared the match at one, but the ball went just out of reach of Ryan Vazquez. Shortly thereafter, the Valiants had two good scoring opportunities in less than a minute, but senior
Jeff Santos (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) had his shot from just outside the box deflected wide, and off the ensuing corner kick, Araujo's header hit the crossbar.
In the 68th minute, Olle scored his second goal of the season from 25 yards out, tucking the shot just inside the left post off a pass from Araujo.
Ayala lost the shutout in the 81st minute when Sam Monaco's shot from 10 yards out rocketed off the underside of the crossbar and landed just beyond the goal line. The Lions would take just one more shot over the final nine minutes.
The Valiants return to MAC Freedom Conference play Friday night on the road at 7:00 p.m. against King's. The team returns to GoValiants.com Field next Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. against Misericordia.
