24 Offensive Rebounds, 23 Second Chance Points Key Women's Basketball Win over Ramapo

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's basketball team capitalized on a +19 rebounding margin for a near wire-to-wire 60-45 victory against Ramapo College Sunday afternoon at Kennedy Gymnasium.

Manhattanville (3-1) grabbed 24 offensive rebounds, leading to 23 second chance points against the Roadrunners. Seven different players grabbed at least one offensive rebound for the Valiants, led by senior Joiada Darnell (St. Albans, N.Y./Humanities and the Arts), who had nine of those offensive boards, part of a 12-point, 11-rebound performance for the game's only double-double. Junior Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) added a season-high 21 points with five rebounds, four of them on the offensive glass, while freshman Jykayla Elting (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) added nine points and nine rebounds (three offensive). Fellow freshman Sarah Coutu (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) joined McGuire and Darnell in double figures with 11 points.

Alie Wickersheim's layup 67 seconds into the opening quarter for Ramapo (2-3) to tie the score at two was the only time all game the Valiants did not lead. Four straight free throws, two each by Coutu and McGuire, were the first four points of an eventual 14-0 Manhattanville run over a five-and-a-half minute stretch in the opening quarter.

Ramapo responded with a 10-2 run of its own between the end of the first quarter and start of the second quarter to trim the lead to six, 18-12. McGuire would score five straight points from there, as the Valiants responded with a 17-8 run over the final 7+ minutes of the first half to take a 15-point lead into the second half.

Elting grabbed seven of her rebounds and scored seven of her points in a back-and-forth second half, despite being on the court just nine minutes; Manhattanville's lead fluctuated between 12 and 19 points over the second half.

The Valiants are back in action at home this coming Thursday at 6:00 p.m. against the Baruch Bearcats, the first game in a women's/men's doubleheader. The men's game against Purchase, the Battle for Anderson Hill Road, is scheduled to tip at 8:00 p.m.
