PURCHASE, N.Y. – Junior
Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers), sophomore
Nancy Caballero (Henderson, Nev./Liberty), and freshman
Sarah Coutu (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) all scored in double figures and the Manhattanville College women's basketball team held off several second half runs by Baruch College Thursday night at Kennedy Gymnasium, winning 47-39.
For the 3
rd time this season, Manhattanville (4-1) never trailed, though the eight-point margin of victory was its closest win this season.
Caballero reached double figures before the end of the first half, then grabbed her 10
th rebound near the end of the third quarter for her second double-double of the season. She finished with 12 and 12. Coutu added nine of her 11 in the first half, as the Valiants raced out to a 28-10 halftime lead on Baruch (0-2).
With the Valiants still up 36-19 midway through the third quarter, the Bearcats reeled off nine straight points, slicing the gap down to eight points, but McGuire responded with four straight points, giving her 12 for the night, maintaining her double-figure scoring streak, reaching the mark in all five Manhattanville games this season. She finished with
her first double-double of the season, 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bearcats cut the deficit back under 10 points before the start of the fourth on a three-pointer by Melinda Spahiu, who scored nine points in the third quarter alone, and finished with a game-high 15.
After a
Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) three-pointer pushed the lead back to 12 thirty seconds into the final quarter, the Valiants went cold, going scoreless more than seven-and-a-half minutes, while the Bearcats got as close as five points with 1:30 remaining. That was as close as Baruch would get, however, as the team's final two shots were both unsuccessful, and freshman
Jykayla Elting (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) scored the game's final three points for Manhattanville. Elting finished a stat-sheet stuffing night with five points, six rebounds, a game-high five assists, and two steals.
The Valiants return to their home floor Monday at 6 p.m. against the Raptors of Bard College.
