PURCHASE, N.Y. – Another career night for sophomore
Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) was not enough to push the Manhattanville College women's basketball team past nationally ranked FDU-Florham Wednesday evening in their penultimate regular season matchup, as the Valiants fell to the Devils 68-48 inside Kennedy Gymnasium.
McGuire led the way for Manhattanville with a career-best 25 points, and added 12 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. Sophomore
Ivy Coles (Freeport, N.Y./Christ The King) chipped in an additional seven points and senior
Brittany Deieso (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) added six points. The Devils were led by Kendrea Williams who scored a career-high 32 on the night.
It was all Fairleigh Dickinson from the opening tip Wednesday as the Devils full-court trap and red-hot offense caused havoc for Manhattanville all night. The Valiants only got two of their 13 attempts from the field to fall in the first quarter and found themselves trailing 20-4 at the first break in the action.
It was much of the same in the second quarter. Manhattanville used a 6-0 run to respond to a big Devil run to begin the second quarter, but the offensive spark was short lived as the Devils used seven points in the final minute of the half to take a 43-14 lead into the locker room.
Manhattanville showed life in the second half as McGuire netted 19 of her 25 points in the final 20 minutes of action and the crimson and black outscored the Devils 34-25 in the half. The Valiants chipped away at the Devil deficit but the lead was too much to conquer. McGuire hit her first career three-pointer in the final minutes but Manhattanville ultimately fell to the Devils by the 20-point margin.
Manhattanville will have one final game in the 2016-17 season this weekend when they host Misericordia University Saturday on Senior Day when the squad will honor the three graduating members of this year's team. Tip-off for that contest is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
