UNION, N.J. – The Manhattanville College baseball team dropped their season opener to SUNY Brockport Sunday afternoon, falling to the Golden Eagles 6-1 at the Jim Hynes Baseball Stadium on the campus of Kean University.
The Valiants threw eight different pitchers in their first matchup of the season, with sophomore
Pat Badia (Somers, N.Y./Somers) getting the start on opening day. Badia tossed two scoreless innings, striking out two in his debut. Freshmen
Matt Galyas (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) and
Richie Vetrano (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) along with junior
Jorge Castro (Yonkers, N.Y./Globe Institute of Technology) made their Valiant debut on the mound in the contest. Sam McCumiskey threw six scoreless innings for the Golden Eagles to earn the win.
Senior
Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) went 2-for-4 at the dish for Manhattanville, and sophomore
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) recorded his first multi-hit game as well with two singles. Freshman
Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) doubled in his second at bat for his first career hit and first extra-base hit.
Brockport got on the board first Sunday when Paul Ludden doubled down the right field line to plate Avery Brooks and take a 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles added three more in the fifth to make it 4-0.
The Valiants scored their only run of the afternoon in the top of the eighth inning when Iannarilli scored on a wild pitch, but Brockport responded with two more runs in bottom half of the frame for the 6-1 final.
The Valiants have two weeks to prepare for their next matchup when they take on Johnson & Wales in their first game at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Saturday, March 4.
