Baseball Falls in Opener of Ripken Experience 15-10

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Manhattanville College baseball team was unable to get by Johnson & Wales in their first game at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, falling in a high scoring affair 15-10 inside Griffith Field Saturday.

Saturday's contest featured a combined 25 runs and 34 hits in an offensive explosion. Senior Joe Booker (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson) went 2-for-5 at the dish, driving in two runs and scoring twice for Manhattanville. Junior Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) also had a big day at the plate, registering three hits and scoring three runs. The Wildcats were led by designated hitter Edison Mercado who went 4-for-5  at the plate with two runs batted in and three runs scored.

On the mount, junior Pat Badia (Somers, N.Y./Somers) suffered his first loss of the year for Manhattanville, allowing six runs over 4.1 innings pitched with two strikeouts. Keith Grant earned the win for Johnson & Wales, allowing five runs over five innings while fanning seven for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats took the lead with two runs in the top of the second before the Valiants tied things with an RBI single from senior John Delahanty (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and a throwing error on a stolen base by Gallagher. The tie did not last long however as the Wildcats plated 12 runs over the next four frames to take a commanding lead. Manhattanville scored five times in the bottom of the ninth but it was too little too late as the deficit was too much to overcome and the Crimson and Black fell by the 15-10 final score.
