NORFOLK, Va. – Junior
Carly Weiss (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) scored the game-winning goal 2:10 into overtime for her team-leading sixth point of the night as the Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season by outlasting Virginia Wesleyan College, 14-13 (OT), in a non-conference battle on a chilly Thursday night at Birdsong Field.
Weiss led Manhattanville (1-2) with her six points, scoring three times and adding three assists, in addition to controlling four draws and adding three ground balls. She was helped offensively by sophomore
Kat Reilly (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North), who matched her career high with five goals to go with four ground balls and four draw controls, and senior
Jenna Nance (Glendale, Calif./Glendale), who also matched her career best with four goals.
Weiss was the hero for Manhattanville, which controlled the crucial draw to start overtime and never gave the ball away. After junior
Jennifer Machin (Brunswick, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) gave the visitors the first possession, the Valiants had two shots go wide of the cage before Weiss scored unassisted with 50 seconds left to win the game.
The second half was a back-and-forth frame, featuring five lead changes over the 30 minutes. Reilly started the half with her second of the game to give the Valiants a 7-6 lead, but Virginia Wesleyan (0-6) scored five of the next seven goals to take their biggest lead of the night at 11-9 with 12:46 remaining.
However, Manhattanville roared back with four of the next five goals to regain the lead. Nance and sophomore
Evaline Diaz (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) scored 51 seconds apart to tie the score and then, after VWC's Liza Holford scored her game-high seventh of the night to put the home team back up by a goal, Reilly scored back-to-back goals to make the score 13-12 in favor of the Valiants with 4:22 left.
Manhattanville had a chance to end the game in regulation after the Marlins' Becca Winslow tied the score with 1:11 remaining, but the Valiants could not get a shot off and the game went to overtime.
Freshman
Bella Marchiselli (Williston Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) earned her first collegiate victory in goal for the Valiants, making five saves on 18 shots in her second straight start.
Manhattanville finished the game with a 36-25 edge in shots, forcing Marlins goalie Jordan Callahan to make 13 saves. The Valiants also did an excellent job in keeping and gaining possession, picking up 25 ground balls and only turning the ball over 18 times while forcing 14 of VWC's 26 giveaways. The visitors were also 20-of-22 on clearance attempts on the evening as well.
Manhattanville will look to get back to .500 on Saturday, when the Valiants stay down south to take on Sweet Briar College beginning at 1 p.m.
