READING, Pa. – Senior
Andrew Murray (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) became the 12th Valiant in program history to eclipse the 100-point plateau and Manhattanville took down Alvernia University 7-5 Saturday on the road in non-conference action.
A goal and an assist for the Yonkers native gave the senior 12 points for the season and 100 for his career, becoming the first player since Joey Hasbrouck '10 to eclipse the milestone for Manhattanville.
Fellow senior
Ed Motherway (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) led the Valiants with two goals Saturday, and freshman
Ryan Leonard (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) led the team with three points on a goal and two assists. Senior
Colin Morrissey (Shelton, Conn./St. Joseph) added the final multi-point game with a goal and an assist in the win. Between the pipes, senior
Zach Hoffman (Loudonville, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) matched his season high in saves with 13 as he improved to 3-2 on the year in goal. Despite being outshot 32-22, the Valiants held a slight advantage in ground balls (33-29) and successfully cleared 19 of 24 attempts on the afternoon.
Freshman
Ryan Leonard (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) scored the first goal of a very low scoring first half, putting Manhattanville on top 1-0 on his second goal of the season midway through the opening quarter. With just over one minute remaining in the opening stanza, Murray buried his eighth tally of the season to make it 2-0, a score that would hold the rest of the first half as neither team scored in the second period of play.
Alvernia cut the lead in half one minute into the second half when Sam St. Croix beat Hoffman for the first Crusader goal of the day. The two squads traded goals over the next six minutes of action, with the Valiants holding on to a 4-3 lead midway through the third quarter. The Valiants scored the next three goals however to take command, capping off the scoring run with a goal by sophomore
Tristan Green (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow) off a feed from Murray for his 100th point. Two late goals by the Crusaders was not enough to come from behind and the Valiants defeated Alvernia 7-5.
The win gives Manhattanville six in a row against the Crusaders dating back to 2008 and gives the Crimson and Black a 3-2 record on the season. With the loss Alvernia dips to 3-4 in 2017. Manhattanville will look to continue their winning ways on Monday when they travel to Mount Saint Mary for a 7:00 faceoff with the Knights.
