NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Senior
Andrew Murray (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) scored the game-winning goal with 26 seconds remaining in regulation to help the Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team come from behind in the second half to defeat Mount Saint Mary 15-14 Monday evening at Kaplan Field.
Murray led all scorers with a season-best five goals Monday in the non-conference bout with the Knights, scoring four of his five goals in the second half to lead the comeback effort. The senior also added an assist for six points on the night. Freshman
Ryan Leonard (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) scored three goals on the night and sophomore
Tristan Green (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow) each added two goals in the win.
It was an offensive showcase all night for both squads, with the teams combining for 78 shot attempts, 47 finding the target. The Valiants successfully cleared six of their eight attempts while the Knights also were efficient on the defensive end, clearing 15 of their 18 attempts. The Valiants dominated in the ground ball category, holding a 38-23 advantage in loose balls and won 24 of the game's 32 face-offs.
Trailing 8-6 at halftime, the Valiants came alive offensively in the second half, scoring nine times over the final 30 minutes of game action. After allowing the first goal of the second half, Manhattanville struck twice in 40 seconds to make it a 9-8 game early in the third quarter. Mount Saint Mary stretched the lead back up to three goals with consecutive strikes before Manhattanville took over late in the third. With 3:04 to play in the third stanza, Murray buried his third goal of the evening and Leonard ripped home a shot 36 seconds later to pull the Valiants within one with 15 minutes to play.
The scoring run continued for the Crimson and Black to begin the final quarter with Murray striking for the fourth time to level the score, and the Valiants went up for the first time since leading 3-2 in the second quarter senior
Ed Motherway (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) scored midway through the quarter. After trading goals, the Knights leveled the scoring with 2:03 to play on Nicholas Graziano's 16th strike of the season. Manhattanville won the ensuing faceoff and head coach
Ryder Bohlander called a timeout to set up an attack for the winning goal. With 41 seconds to play, Murray ripped a shot that was stopped by Knight goalkeeper Christopher Doerr, but scored on the second chance opportunity with 26 seconds to play in what would be the game-winning goal, giving the Valiants the 15-14 victory.
With the win Manhattanville moves 4-2 on the season, their best six-game start since 2008 when the Valiants won six of their first seven contests. The team continues their non-conference stretch of the schedule Thursday when they travel to Rhode Island to take on Salve Regina at 7:00 pm.
