Valiants Ends Busy Weekend On Four Game Winning Streak With Sweep of Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Manhattanville baseball team wrapped up its hectic weekend by sweeping the College of Staten Island on Sunday in nonconference action at the CSI Baseball Complex.

The Valiants, who played their fourth and fifth game in three days, defeated the Dolphins 5-2 in game number one then rallied to defeat the defending CUNYAC champions 2-1 in the second contest.

Game One

Manhattanville (5-7, 2-1 MAC Freedom) scored a run in the first three innings to start the day. Junior Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) led off with a double then eventually came around to score on a throwing error by the Dolphin's catcher trying to catch sophomore Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) stealing second. The second inning started with a walk to senior Joe Booker (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson) who was batted around to third and scored on a wild pitch. The following inning Scoggins ripped a double to right center field that scored senior Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) all the way from first to help push the Valiant lead to three.

CSI (6-5-1) broke the goose egg in the scoring column in the bottom half of the third after freshman Nick Meola singled to short and scored senior Frank Sconzo.

The Valiants would push the lead back up to three their next at bat when Gallagher singled through the right side scoring sophomore Tom Gilmartin (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) from second.

The Dolphins responded in the fifth thanks to Meola's second RBI coming off of a single to center field that scored senior Bobby Drake from second following Drake's leadoff double.

Manhattanville would put the game firmly in its favor after senior Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) recorded his sixth RBI of the season on groundout that scored Gilmartin in the sixth.

Junior William Mohr (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands) recorded the final out without throwing a pitch when he picked off the runner trying to steal second to secure the three-run victory for the Valiants.

Senior John Moschetti (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) picked up his first win of the year. In five innings of work, Moschetti gave up two runs on eight hits and struck out two batters. CSI sophomore James Taunton recorded the loss after giving up four runs on five hits in five innings.

Game Two

In game number two the Valiants rallied to defeat Staten Island 2-1 to complete the sweep thanks to the heroics of junior Nick Campana (Yonkers, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Elementary).

Trailing by one with only four outs left in the game. Campana ripped a single through the right side to score Gallagher and Lynch to give Manhattanville the lead.

The Dolphins got on the scoreboard first in the third when Sconzo was able to score freshman Jett Nouvertne from third on a groundout to short.

After surrendering the first run of the game junior pitcher Thomas Contrelli (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) kept the CSI bats at bay only surrendering two hits in the next three innings of work.

The Valiants would finally breakthrough in the sixth. Gallagher continued his strong play at the plate with a leadoff double. The senior Lynch reached base safely on an error and Scoggins was hit by a pitch to load the bases setting Campana's heroics.

Contrelli continued to cruise as he sat down the three CSI batters in order to keep the lead at one going into the final frame.

After two of the first three Dolphin batters reached base safely, junior John Fanelli (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) came into the game and recorded the final two outs to pick up the save and preserve the win.

Contrelli recorded the win giving up the lone run on six hits while striking out three. Staten Island pitcher Ryan Kennedy picked up the loss giving up two runs on just four hits.
