Carly Weiss (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) recorded a career-high nine points and senior
Lauren Cassidy (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) made a season-high 13 saves to lead the Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team to a 13-11 non-conference victory over Rutgers University-Camden on a brisk Saturday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.
Weiss was all over the field again, leading all players with five goals, four assists, six ground balls and four caused turnovers in addition to four draw controls. Senior
Sarah Dalsey (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) scored once and controlled a game-high four draws, while sophomore
Kat Reilly (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) also scored three times with an assist for Manhattanville (5-3), which has won five of its last six games after an 0-2 start.
On the defensive end, Cassidy had a big game as well between the pipes, turning aside a season-high 13 shots – including eight in the second half – to pick up her third victory of the year.
Rutgers-Camden scored three of the first five goals of the contest to take a 3-2 lead with 6:45 gone by in the first half, but Manhattanville scored four straight goals to take a lead that the home team would never relinquish. Weiss scored her second and third of the game to put the Valiants up 4-3, followed by two goals in 46 seconds from Dalsey and Reilly to make it a 6-3 score with 12:54 left.
The teams traded goals the rest of the half, with Weiss scoring again and junior
Christina Leva (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) also finding the net to put Manhattanville up 8-6 at the half. The Valiants finished the opening 30 minutes with a 15-13 edge in shots, with Cassidy making five saves.
The home team opened up its biggest lead of the game after scoring the first two goals of the second half, as Reilly followed a goal from junior
Jennifer Machin (Brunswick, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) with her third of the day 28 seconds later to put the Valiants up 10-6. The Scarlet Raptors pulled within two on a pair of occasions in the second stanza, but Cassidy came up with several huge stops to keep her team ahead and senior
Jenna Nance (Glendale, Calif./Glendale) scored twice to help maintain the Valiant advantage.
The game was evenly played by both sides, with the two teams both taking 29 shots on the day. Manhattanville boasted a 17-9 edge in draw controls as well.
Manhattanville will take its two-game winning streak into MAC Freedom play on Wednesday, when the Valiants travel to Delaware Valley University for a 4 p.m. matchup with the Aggies.
